You are an artist-in-residence
at a Navajo tribe in New Mexico, and have been studying the
techniques of sand painting and rock art during your stay. One
of the elder tribe members has been watching your work, and is
impressed with your skills. He hands you a packet of some of
the tribe's favorite Native American poetry and stories, and
asks that you create a sand painting that reflects the images
and symbols found in the poems. In particular, he would like
for you to reflect an understanding of the relationships
between God, nature, and the individual through your sand
painting as seen from the readings. Honored, you accept his
offer. On the opening day of your exhibit, you will be asked
to explain the meaning and artist process of your work.
